Easy memory game: 8 pairs on a 4×4 grid
This easy memory game lays out 16 cards, 8 pairs of simple shapes, on a 4×4 grid. A game takes a minute or two, which makes it a good first round for children and a quick break for everyone else. Free, with no app, no sign-up and no interstitial before play; it works offline and plays from the keyboard.
How to play the easy memory game
- Tap or click a card to turn it over, then turn a second card.
- A matching pair stays face up with a green frame; a mismatch turns back down.
- Turn a third card to flip a mismatch back straight away.
- Each pair turned is one move. The best possible game is 8 moves.
- Clear all 8 pairs to win and see your time and moves.
Tips for the 4×4 board
Sixteen cards are few enough to hold in your head, so the 4×4 board is where good habits are easiest to learn. With perfect recall the average game takes about 12 moves; a score in the low teens is excellent.
Four rows, four names
Work through the rows in order. Four cards per row means you only need to remember a short list for each row, such as "moon, key, star, bell". Children often find it easier to say the shapes out loud.
Two new cards per move
Turn a card you have not seen first. If it matches one you remember, take the pair. If not, turn another unseen card, so each move shows you as much as possible.
Claim late pairs straight away
Sometimes your second card matches a card you saw earlier, not the first one you turned. The pair cannot be taken on this move, so make it your very next move, before a new card pushes it out of your mind.
Do not chase speed at first
Aim for fewer moves before you aim for a faster time. Once your move count settles close to 12, speed comes naturally, because you stop turning cards you have already seen.
Daily, stats and printables
The timer starts when you turn the first card, stops on the last pair and pauses when you switch tabs. Stats are kept per board size in your browser: games played, won, win rate, best time and average time. The 4×4 board keeps its own best time, separate from 6×6.
There is no undo and no hint in Memory Match; the game is your memory against the grid. Each layout has a five-character puzzle code such as A7K3Q, so ?p= replays the same cards in the same places, which makes a fair race with a friend. Share result copies your time and move count. There is no daily Memory Match and no printable version.
Plays anywhere, no app, no account
On a 360 px phone each card on the 4×4 grid is about 69 px square, large enough for small fingers, and the whole board also plays with the arrow keys and Enter. Tidy Puzzles runs entirely in your browser: there is no app to install, no account to create and no interstitial before you can play. After the first visit the game also works offline, because each puzzle is generated on your device from a seed. Every board can be played with the keyboard alone, on a phone or a desktop, and your stats and unfinished puzzles stay in this browser rather than on a server.
