2048 5x5 board with twenty-five cells and a chain of tiles along the bottom edge

Play 2048 5×5 on a roomier board

2048 5×5 gives the classic game nine more cells. The rules and the 2048 target stay the same, but the extra row and column mean fewer lost positions and room to plan several merges ahead. Free to play with no app, no sign-up and no interstitial before the board; it works offline and every move can be made from the keyboard.

How to play 2048

  1. Slide every tile in one direction: swipe on the board, or press an arrow key or W, A, S, D.
  2. Two tiles with the same number merge into one tile with their sum when they touch during a slide. Each tile merges at most once per move.
  3. After every move a new tile appears in an empty cell: a 2 most of the time, a 4 about one time in ten.
  4. Your score is the sum of all merged tiles. Undo takes back one move.
  5. Reach the target tile to win. It is 2048 on most boards, 1024 on 3×3 (the largest tile nine cells can hold), and 4096 or 8192 on those variants.
  6. The game is over when the board is full and no slide can merge anything.
  7. To carry on past the target, turn on "Keep playing after reaching the target" in Settings before starting a game.

How to play 2048 on the 5×5 board

  1. Slide every tile with a swipe, an arrow key or W, A, S, D.
  2. Equal tiles that touch merge into their sum; each tile merges at most once per move.
  3. A new 2 (or, one time in ten, a 4) appears after each move.
  4. Make a 2048 tile to win. The board has 25 cells instead of 16.
  5. Press Keep playing on the win panel to carry on for a higher tile and score.

2048 5×5 strategy: using the extra space

The 5×5 board is the friendliest step up from the classic game. The corner strategy still works, but the extra cells change which mistakes matter.

Longer rows mean longer chains

A row of five holds a chain like 1024, 512, 256, 128, 64 before you need to turn the corner into the second row. Build the edge in falling order from the corner, and the whole row can fold into the corner tile with a run of moves in one direction.

The fourth direction is less dangerous

On 4×4, a move away from your corner often ruins the game. On 5×5 there is usually enough room to recover, so you can use it to free a stuck merge. Still press the repair move straight after.

Watch the far side of the board

With 25 cells, small tiles collect in the rows away from your corner and are easy to forget. Sweep them together every few moves.

Plan for a long game

Making 2048 takes at least about 930 moves on any board, because each move adds about 2.2 in value. The timer pauses when you switch tabs and the game is saved on your device, so take breaks.

Daily, stats and printables

The timer starts on your first move and pauses when you switch tabs. Stats are kept per board in your browser: played, won, win rate, best and average time, and best score, saved when a game ends in a win or a loss.

Undo takes back one move. There are no hints, since 2048 has no single right move. Each game has a puzzle code such as A7K3Q; open it with ?p= to replay the same start and the same new tiles. The end panel copies a short result to share. There is no daily 2048 and no printable version.

Plays anywhere, no app, no account

On a 360 px phone the 5×5 board still fills the width with tiles large enough to swipe comfortably, and the arrow keys work the moment the board is on screen. Tidy Puzzles runs entirely in your browser: there is no app to install, no account to create and no interstitial before you can play. After the first visit the game also works offline, because each puzzle is generated on your device from a seed. Every board can be played with the keyboard alone, on a phone or a desktop, and your stats and unfinished puzzles stay in this browser rather than on a server.

Frequently asked questions

Is 2048 5×5 easier than 4×4?

Yes. The nine extra cells give far more room to recover from a bad move, so reaching 2048 is much more likely, though it takes a long time.

What is the highest tile on a 5×5 board?

In principle far beyond 2048; the extra cells let you hold a much longer chain. In practice, 4096 and 8192 are realistic goals if you keep playing after the win.

Can I keep playing after 2048 on 5×5?

Yes. Press Keep playing on the win panel, or turn on the keep-playing setting before you start.

Does the corner strategy work on 5×5?

Yes. Keep the largest tile in one corner and build a falling chain along the edge. The longer rows simply let the chain grow further before it turns.

Are 5×5 scores kept separately?

Yes. Each board size has its own stats and best score in your browser.
