How to play the fruits word search
- Twelve fruits are hidden across, down or diagonally, forwards or backwards.
- Drag from the first letter to the last, or tap both in turn.
- A correct find is banded in colour and struck off; wrong picks are ignored.
- Hint marks the first letter of a word you have not found.
- On a 12×12, PASSIONFRUIT fills a whole row, column or diagonal from edge to edge.
Fruits word search strategy
Fruit names are the longest on the site, more than seven letters on average, so this theme plays differently: the words are easy to see but easy to confuse, because so many share an ending.
The BERRY family
Eight fruits end in BERRY: STRAWBERRY, RASPBERRY, BLUEBERRY, BLACKBERRY, CRANBERRY, GOOSEBERRY, ELDERBERRY and MULBERRY. The RR pair makes BERRY easy to find, but when several are in the grid you must read the front of the word to know which one you have. BERRY is on the list by itself too, and never shares a grid with any of them.
The FRUIT family
GRAPEFRUIT, PASSIONFRUIT, STARFRUIT, DRAGONFRUIT and JACKFRUIT all end in FRUIT. Scanning for FRUIT finds all of them at once, which is no help. Look for the start instead: the GR, PA, ST, DR or J, then read forward to the T.
Words inside words
APPLE sits inside PINEAPPLE, GRAPE inside GRAPEFRUIT and MELON inside WATERMELON, so only one of each pair is ever chosen. Rare letters help as always: QUINCE and KUMQUAT have the Qs, JACKFRUIT the only J, KIWI and KUMQUAT a K. FIG, at three letters, is the one to sweep for last.
Words in the fruits word search
The fruits list is short, 54 names, but its words are long: more than a third have nine letters or more. PASSIONFRUIT, at twelve, shares the record for the longest word on the site with PHOTOGRAPHER, and POMEGRANATE and DRAGONFRUIT have eleven. Only FIG has three letters. A 10×10 cannot fit words over ten letters, so those three fruits never appear on it.
The list goes by family. Orchard fruit: APPLE, PEAR, PEACH, PLUM, APRICOT, CHERRY, NECTARINE, QUINCE. Melons: MELON, WATERMELON, CANTALOUPE, HONEYDEW. Citrus: ORANGE, LEMON, LIME, GRAPEFRUIT, TANGERINE, CLEMENTINE, MANDARIN, KUMQUAT. Berries of every kind, plus CURRANT. And a long tropical run: BANANA, KIWI, MANGO, PAPAYA, PINEAPPLE, GUAVA, LYCHEE, COCONUT, POMEGRANATE, PERSIMMON, DURIAN, TAMARIND, JACKFRUIT, DRAGONFRUIT, STARFRUIT and PLANTAIN.
A few are fruits by botany rather than by the fruit bowl: TOMATO, OLIVE and AVOCADO. RHUBARB is the opposite, a stalk that is cooked like fruit. TOMATO also appears in the vegetables and food themes.
Stats, hints and printables
The timer pauses when the tab is hidden, and Fruits stats (played, won, win rate, best and average time) stay in this browser. The first two hints are free; once ads are enabled, more cost a short ad or a 30-second wait. Every grid has a code such as A7K3Q to replay or share, and the printable page makes fruits sheets.
Plays anywhere, no app, no account
Long fruit names are easy to select on a phone: tap the first letter, then the last, instead of dragging across the grid. Tidy Puzzles runs entirely in your browser: there is no app to install, no account to create and no interstitial before you can play. After the first visit the game also works offline, because each puzzle is generated on your device from a seed. Every board can be played with the keyboard alone, on a phone or a desktop, and your stats and unfinished puzzles stay in this browser rather than on a server.
