Travel word search: trips, tickets and transport

Pack for a travel word search with 62 words about getting away: PASSPORT, TICKET and LUGGAGE, the AIRPLANE, TRAIN and FERRY, places to stay from TENT to RESORT, and the SOUVENIR you bring home. A 12×12 grid hides twelve. No app, no sign-up and no interstitial before play; it works offline, which suits a long journey, and plays from the keyboard.

How to play Word Search

  1. Every word in the list below the grid is hidden in a straight line: across, down or diagonally, forwards or backwards. The kids grid only uses across, down and the two diagonals that run to the right.
  2. Press on the first letter and drag to the last letter, or tap the first letter and then the last letter.
  3. A correct selection gets a coloured band and the word is crossed off the list. Selections that match nothing are simply ignored.
  4. The timer starts on your first selection and stops when the last word is found.
  5. Hint marks the first letter of one word you have not found yet.
  6. Grid size (10 to 20) is in Settings and applies to the next new game.

  1. Twelve travel words are hidden across, down or diagonally, forwards or backwards.
  2. Drag from the first letter to the last, or tap both in turn.
  3. A correct find is banded in colour and struck off; wrong picks are ignored.
  4. Hint marks the first letter of a word you have not found.
  5. Load the page once before you leave and it plays offline on the plane or train.

Travel word search strategy

Travel words are mid-length and made mostly of common letters, so the quickest route through a grid is to look for the few letters that are unusual here, then deal with the look-alikes.

X, J and V

TAXI, EXCHANGE and EXPLORE have the only Xs, and JOURNEY the only J. V appears in VOYAGE, VACATION, VISA, VILLAGE, SOUVENIR and ADVENTURE, and V is uncommon in the fill, so a V is a good place to start. Check its eight neighbours for the next letter of each V word in your list.

Tell HOTEL, MOTEL and HOSTEL apart

Three places to stay differ by a letter or two. HOTEL and MOTEL share OTEL, and HOSTEL adds an S. If more than one is in the list, find the OTEL or STEL run and then check the letter in front of it before you drag.

PORT and its longer cousins

PORT sits inside PASSPORT and AIRPORT, so the generator never puts PORT in the same grid as either. If AIRPORT is in the list, any PORT you spot next to AIR belongs to it. Doubles help as well: the SS in PASSPORT and COMPASS, the GG in LUGGAGE, the RR in FERRY and CURRENCY.

Words in the travel word search

The travel list has 62 words, from MAP and BUS to ADVENTURE at nine letters, with an unusual number of eight-letter words such as PASSPORT, VACATION, SUITCASE, AIRPLANE, PLATFORM, SOUVENIR and POSTCARD.

It follows a trip from start to finish. Paperwork first: PASSPORT, TICKET, VISA, CUSTOMS, BORDER, CURRENCY and EXCHANGE. Then the way there, by AIRPLANE, TRAIN, BUS, TAXI, FERRY or CRUISE, along a ROAD, HIGHWAY, STREET, BRIDGE or TUNNEL, through the AIRPORT, STATION, RUNWAY, PLATFORM or HARBOR. Places to sleep run from TENT and CAMP to CABIN, HOSTEL, MOTEL, HOTEL and RESORT, and places to see from BEACH, MOUNTAIN and ISLAND to CITY, VILLAGE, CAPITAL, MUSEUM and LANDMARK.

VACATION and HOLIDAY are both here, so the list works in either English. The keepsakes are CAMERA, PHOTO, POSTCARD and SOUVENIR, and the spirit of the thing is ADVENTURE and EXPLORE.

Stats, hints and printables

The timer pauses when the tab is hidden, and Travel stats (played, won, win rate, best and average time) stay in this browser. The first two hints are free; once ads are enabled, more cost a short ad or a 30-second wait. Every grid has a code such as A7K3Q to replay or share, and the printable page makes travel sheets.

Plays anywhere, no app, no account

The travel grid is made for phones on the move: it fits the screen, needs no connection once cached, and plays with one thumb. Tidy Puzzles runs entirely in your browser: there is no app to install, no account to create and no interstitial before you can play. After the first visit the game also works offline, because each puzzle is generated on your device from a seed. Every board can be played with the keyboard alone, on a phone or a desktop, and your stats and unfinished puzzles stay in this browser rather than on a server.
