How to play the holidays word search
- Twelve holiday words are hidden in straight lines, in any of eight directions.
- Drag from the first letter to the last, or tap both in turn.
- A correct find is banded in colour and struck off; wrong picks are ignored.
- Hint marks the first letter of a word you have not found.
- The list covers every season, so one grid can mix a SLEIGH with a PICNIC.
Holidays word search strategy
The holidays list has no Q, X or Z at all, so the usual trick of starting with the rarest letter needs adjusting. Any of those three letters you see in the grid is fill and can be ignored.
Use K, W and V instead
K appears in CAKE, COOKIE, MASK, STOCKING, PUMPKIN, BASKET, FIREWORKS and TURKEY. W appears in BOW, WRAP, WREATH, SWEETS, FIREWORKS and SNOWMAN. V is in VACATION, FESTIVAL and VALENTINE. None of these letters is common in the fill, so each one is worth checking.
Look for the doubles
RIBBON, BALLOON, DINNER, COOKIE, SWEETS, HOLLY, REINDEER, CONFETTI, BUNNY and BANNER all have a doubled letter, and BALLOON has two. Doubles look the same from both ends, so they catch backwards words.
Long words anchor the grid
CELEBRATION (eleven letters) and DECORATION (ten) are easy to see once you look. On a 12×12, CELEBRATION fills eleven of the twelve cells in its line, so it starts or ends at the edge. Band the long words early: they use up letters that would otherwise hide BOW, PIE and EGG. Those three are best found last, with a slow row-by-row sweep for their first letter.
Words in the holidays word search
The holidays list has 66 words, written for celebrations in general rather than any single holiday, so it suits a class or family of any background. It runs from BOW, PIE and EGG to CELEBRATION at eleven letters, with six- to eight-letter words such as RIBBON, LANTERN, COSTUME and ORNAMENT making up the middle.
Much of it is universal: PARTY, GIFT, PRESENT, CARD, CANDLE, CAKE, FEAST, DINNER, FAMILY, FRIENDS, PARADE, FESTIVAL, TRADITION and CONFETTI. Then each season gets a corner. Winter brings SLEIGH, REINDEER, SNOWMAN, STOCKING, CHIMNEY, CAROL, HOLLY, MISTLETOE, TINSEL, WREATH and GARLAND. Autumn has PUMPKIN, HARVEST, COSTUME, MASK and TURKEY. Spring has EGG, BUNNY and BASKET, with HEART and VALENTINE nearby, and summer is PICNIC, BARBECUE, BEACH, SUNSHINE, VACATION and FIREWORKS.
MISTLETOE has a silent T, and BARBECUE is spelled the long way.
Stats, hints and printables
The timer pauses when the tab is hidden, and Holidays stats (played, won, win rate, best and average time) stay in this browser. The first two hints are free; once ads are enabled, more cost a short ad or a 30-second wait. Every grid has a code such as A7K3Q to replay or share, and the printable page makes holidays sheets.
Plays anywhere, no app, no account
The holidays grid works on the family tablet as well as a phone or laptop, with tap, drag or keyboard selection. Tidy Puzzles runs entirely in your browser: there is no app to install, no account to create and no interstitial before you can play. After the first visit the game also works offline, because each puzzle is generated on your device from a seed. Every board can be played with the keyboard alone, on a phone or a desktop, and your stats and unfinished puzzles stay in this browser rather than on a server.
