How to play the ocean word search
- Twelve ocean words are hidden across, down or diagonally, forwards or backwards.
- Drag from the first letter to the last, or tap both in turn.
- A correct find is banded in colour and struck off; wrong picks are ignored.
- Hint marks the first letter of a word you have not found.
- Grow the grid to 20×20 in Settings to go after 28 words at once.
Ocean word search strategy
The ocean list is full of nested words and look-alikes, so the best habit here is to read a find to its end before you drag. Three things to watch for, in order.
Nested words
SHELL is inside SEASHELL, FISH inside JELLYFISH, STARFISH and SWORDFISH, and RAY inside STINGRAY and SPRAY. The generator never chooses both a word and a longer word that contains it, so if STINGRAY is in the list there is no separate RAY to find. When you spot a short word, glance at the letters on either side.
SEA and SH starts
SEAL, SEAWEED, SEASHELL and SEAHORSE begin with SEA, and SHELL, SHORE, SHARK, SHRIMP and SHIP with SH. Those starts are common, so pair them with the letter that differs: the W of SEAWEED, the H of SEAHORSE, the K of SHARK. Then read outwards from that letter in both directions.
Rare letters and doubles
SQUID has the only Q and BREEZE the only Z. ANCHOVY has a V and a Y, and JELLYFISH a J. For doubles, look for the EE in EEL, REEF, SEAWEED and MANATEE, the LL of SHELL and GULL, and the SS at the end of ABYSS.
Words in the ocean word search
The ocean list has 77 words, from EEL, RAY, COD and BAY to LIGHTHOUSE at ten letters. Four-letter words, WAVE, TIDE, SURF, REEF, KELP, CLAM, CRAB, TUNA, SEAL and SHIP, are the most common length, which makes this a busy list for its size.
About half is sea life. There are fish (COD, HERRING, SARDINE, ANCHOVY, MARLIN, TUNA, SALMON), shellfish (CLAM, OYSTER, MUSSEL, CRAB, LOBSTER, SHRIMP, PRAWN), mammals (WHALE, DOLPHIN, SEAL, WALRUS, OTTER, MANATEE, NARWHAL, ORCA) and the stranger ones: OCTOPUS, SQUID, URCHIN, ANEMONE, BARNACLE and SPONGE. PENGUIN, PELICAN and GULL fly in from the birds.
The rest is the coast and the deep: WAVE, TIDE and CURRENT, BEACH, SHORE and LAGOON, TRENCH and ABYSS, plus HARBOR, ANCHOR, SAIL, CAPTAIN, DIVER and SNORKEL. HARBOR uses the American spelling. SHRIMP and PRAWN are both included, as are SHELL and SEASHELL, though never in the same grid.
Stats, hints and printables
The timer pauses when the tab is hidden, and Ocean stats (played, won, win rate, best and average time) stay in this browser. The first two hints are free; once ads are enabled, more cost a short ad or a 30-second wait. Every grid has a code such as A7K3Q to replay or share, and the printable page makes ocean sheets.
Plays anywhere, no app, no account
On a phone the ocean grid fills the width of the screen, and on a keyboard the arrows and Space do all the work. Tidy Puzzles runs entirely in your browser: there is no app to install, no account to create and no interstitial before you can play. After the first visit the game also works offline, because each puzzle is generated on your device from a seed. Every board can be played with the keyboard alone, on a phone or a desktop, and your stats and unfinished puzzles stay in this browser rather than on a server.
