A medium sudoku grid with about a third of the cells given

Medium sudoku puzzles, one step past the basics

Medium sudoku grids with 30 to 35 clues. Each has one solution and needs hidden singles and pointing pairs on top of naked singles, but nothing harder. The step where scanning by digit starts to pay off. No app, no sign-up, no interstitial before you play; works offline and fully from the keyboard.

How to play Sudoku

  1. Fill the grid so every row, every column and every box holds each digit exactly once. The puzzle has a single solution and never needs guessing below Evil.
  2. Tap or click a cell, then type a digit or use the digit pad. The pad shows how many of each digit are still missing.
  3. Turn on Notes (or press N) to pencil in the digits a cell could hold. Notes in a row, column or box are removed automatically when you place that digit.
  4. Wrong digits that clash with another cell are outlined. Check marks every entry that differs from the solution; Hint shows the next logical cell and names the technique.
  5. The timer starts on your first move and pauses when you leave the tab. Undo and redo cover the whole game.

How to play medium sudoku

  1. Same rules as every level: 1 to 9 once in each row, column and 3×3 box, starting from 30 to 35 givens.
  2. Givens are fixed. Press a digit again, or Backspace, to clear your own entry.
  3. Scan by digit as well as by cell: ask where each digit can go in each box.
  4. Use Notes (N) for cells with two or three options; placing a digit clears it from nearby notes.
  5. Hint names the technique, for example Hidden single or Pointing pair, and highlights the cells involved.

Medium sudoku: what techniques you need

A Medium grid is rated as needing hidden singles, pointing pairs or pointing triples at least once, and nothing beyond them. Naked singles still do most of the work.

Hidden singles

A hidden single is a digit with only one possible cell in a row, column or box. The cell itself may still have several candidates, which is why looking at cells alone misses it. Pick a digit, say 7, and go box by box: for each box without a 7, cross off the rows and columns that already have a 7. If one cell is left, it is the 7.

Pointing pairs and triples

Sometimes a digit’s possible cells inside a box all lie in one row or one column. The digit must go in that line within the box, so it cannot go anywhere else in the same line. This is a pointing pair (two cells) or pointing triple (three). It does not place a digit by itself; it removes candidates, which then creates a new single somewhere along that line.

A routine that works

Sweep digits 1 to 9 for hidden singles, then check the cells you just changed for naked singles. When a sweep finds nothing, look for a box where a digit is confined to one line.

Stats, hints and printables for medium sudoku

The timer starts on your first move and pauses when you switch tabs. Medium stats stay in your browser: played, won, win rate, best and average time. Undo and redo cover the whole game. The first two hints per puzzle are free; later hints may offer a short ad or a 30-second wait. A puzzle code such as A7K3Q (?p= in the address) replays the same grid, and the win panel gives a result to share.

Medium grids also print as PDFs.

Plays anywhere, no app, no account

Medium sudoku plays on a phone with a digit pad that counts the remaining digits, and on a computer entirely from the keyboard. Tidy Puzzles runs entirely in your browser: there is no app to install, no account to create and no interstitial before you can play. After the first visit the game also works offline, because each puzzle is generated on your device from a seed. Every board can be played with the keyboard alone, on a phone or a desktop, and your stats and unfinished puzzles stay in this browser rather than on a server.

Frequently asked questions

How many clues does a medium sudoku have?

Between 30 and 35 here, and every grid has exactly one solution.

What is the difference between easy and medium sudoku?

Easy needs naked singles only. Medium also needs hidden singles and pointing pairs or triples.

What is a hidden single?

A digit that has only one possible cell in a row, column or box, even though that cell could hold other digits.

What is a pointing pair in sudoku?

A digit confined to one row or column inside a box, which removes it from the rest of that line.

Do medium sudoku puzzles need guessing?

No. A solver checks every Medium grid against these techniques first.
