Expert grids need every Hard technique plus at least one X-wing, Y-wing or swordfish. An X-wing is a digit with exactly two places in each of two rows, in the same two columns; it can be crossed out of the rest of both columns. A swordfish is the three-row version. A Y-wing uses three two-candidate cells: a pivot XY seeing wings XZ and YZ, so any cell seeing both wings loses Z.
On paper, these patterns are easiest to spot with complete, tidy candidates. Fill every cell’s notes once singles and pairs run out, then check digit by digit for rows or columns where a digit appears only twice. A coloured pencil for the digit you are checking helps.
Two per page gives a grid about half a page wide, which is comfortable for notes. Expert sheets suit puzzle clubs and long journeys; one sheet of two can last an evening.
Before hunting for a wing, make sure the grid is fully reduced with pairs, triples and box-line reductions. On paper, a missed elimination is the usual reason an X-wing seems to appear when it does not. If you get stuck, the solver page can show the next step for a grid you type in.
